Benefits of Concrete Testing

Ensuring the safety of infrastructure building work is the key aim of concrete testing, with advantages for commercial and domestic customers alike.

Compliance with Standards – It’s essential that construction projects meet industry and regulatory standards for quality and safety. Concrete testing guarantees to comply with the dedicated legislation preventing you from any future legal issues and that the structure is safe for occupancy.

Durability – Looking at factors such as freeze-thaw cycles, abrasion and chemical exposure, our technicians will identify any potential threats and advise on how to make buildings last longer and reduce the need for repairs.

Structural Integrity – Assessing the strength of the concrete, testing evaluates that it can bear the expected loads and stress without difficulty. This also includes assets such as roads, bridges and infrastructure.

Can Save Costs – Having a professional carry out concrete testing can reduce costs in the future as it extends the lifespan of structures and prevents any structural failures which can lead to costly repairs.

The Concrete Testing Process

A vital step in any construction or civil engineering task, concrete testing is the assessment of properties and the quality of concrete materials. It involves the inspection, measurements and analysis of samples to confirm the quality of the concrete and its structural integrity for the bigger picture.

Starting with sample collections taken from different batches at the construction site, these are then prepared according to standard procedures such as casting fresh concrete into moulds for testing. The initial test looks at properties such as consistency, air content and workability and is then placed in a curing environment for up to 28 days for the concrete to gain strength.

From this point, more testing is required including non-destructive testing, compressive strength testing, tensile strength testing, flexural strength testing, density and void content testing, chemical analysis and durability testing.

The final stage is when the reports and analysis are fed back and decisions about the acceptability of the concrete are made and whether it can be approved for construction.

Concrete Testing FAQs

At Rock Solid Concrete we carry out high-quality concrete tests for a range of customers and clients. Whether you’re a construction company or developer, we’re on hand to answer any queries you may have.

Do I need to carry out concrete testing?

To ensure compliance with quality and safety standards it is a requirement by many building codes and regulations that testing is carried out. This is to gain permits and demonstrate the durability and sound nature of the structure.

What is a concrete cube test?

Also referred to as a cube comprehensive strength test, this is a standard procedure that looks at the strength of hardened concrete. This includes its ability to withstand heavy loads or assets that could crush or squeeze it. At Rock Solid, we can carry out cube testing 7,14 or 28 days after pouring to verify that it meets construction specifications.

Can I troubleshoot construction problems with concrete testing?

Absolutely. If problems or cracks appear in concrete structures, testing can identify the cause and recommend the best measures moving forward to prevent this from happening again.

What do the results mean?

There are set industry standards that need to be met, therefore the concrete testing results will need to reflect this in the project specifications to meet the criteria. If the concrete doesn’t meet the standards then adjustments such as modifying the mix design or curing process will be necessary. If you need any help with this, we are on hand to visit your site and give professional guidance. Click here to learn more about site visits.
