Concrete testing includes the inspection, measurement, and analysis of concrete samples to determine its quality and structural integrity. It is performed during construction at various stages—from the mixing of materials to the final placement of concrete.

When it comes to making sure that your concrete is safe and will last, nobody does a better job than our team of experts. At Rock Solid Concrete, we provide comprehensive concrete testing services that can help you make sure your construction projects are up to standard, and don’t have any underlying structural issues.

We believe in giving you the peace of mind that your concrete is as strong as it can be. That’s why we offer a cube testing service for our customers. Cube testing can take place 7, 14 and 28 days after pouring to verify the compressive strength of the concrete. Please note that we require a minimum of 48 hours notice for this service so we can arrange a technician to visit your site.

Comprehensive Concrete Testing Process

The structural concrete assessment is performed at various stages of construction, from the mixing of materials to the final placement of concrete.  We always adhere to industry standards including BS EN 206 and BS8500, whilst our UKAS-accredited methods and adherence to ISO/IEC 17025 standards illustrate our commitment to compliance. The process starts with a consultation to truly understand your requirements and how we can support you. Then we sample various batches during the pouring process which are then kept in concrete cube test moulds. Our specialist team will then look at compression, slump, density, and flexural strength, amongst other items for a thorough check. The final stage is the detailed analysis and reporting of our findings and whether the samples meet the standard or if we need to enhance the quality of your concrete.

Concrete Testing FAQs

Is it important to have professional concrete testing carried out?

Yes. Concrete testing is an essential part of the construction process as it demonstrates the strength of the concrete, its quality and durability which in the long run means that your building will be structurally sound for years to come. It also shows that you are meeting health and safety standards and building regulations.

Are there certain factors that affect concrete strength?

When looking at what contributes to structural integrity, there are a number of features which help to make the overall concrete mixture strong and able to withstand heavy weights. This includes the water-to-cement ratio, mix design, aggregates, curing conditions and environmental factors when the concrete is laid which can also affect the outcome. Temperatures in particular are ones to watch out for as high temperatures can accelerate the curing process which can result in a lower strength as it hasn’t had time to retain the moisture, whilst low temperatures can slow the curing down. This can increase the risk of freezing before the concrete reaches its set strength.

When is the best time to test concrete?

Testing can be carried out multiple times throughout your construction. In fact, it’s best advised to do so at set stages to get a comprehensive review. This includes during the production of the concrete at the batch plant, during transportation, placement, curing and after the concrete has hardened. This provides us with accurate readings throughout.

How do you test concrete on site?

At Rock Solid Concrete, we pride ourselves on our ability to carry out slump tests and field-cured specimen analysis on-site. We’re able to take a number of samples and then gain further detailed analysis at our fully equipped laboratory.

What happens if the concrete fails testing?

Thankfully, if your concrete fails testing the first time round this doesn’t mean that the project can’t continue. There are options to make adjustments to the mix design, curing methods and general construction practices which can help to improve the quality ready for the next round of testing.

When ordering concrete for my construction project, how do I know how much I need?

Our handy concrete calculator is a fantastic tool that can guide you on how much concrete you’ll need for your specifications without the worry of under-ordering or having extra material that may go to waste. It’s a great indicator that can be used for large and small tasks.
