Why It Matters

Get this right and you won't redo it for 30 years

  • A farm yard takes tractor, telehandler, HGV and livestock traffic, weights no domestic slab is rated for. You need an industrial spec.
  • Air-entrained C32/40 resists freeze-thaw damage that destroys ordinary concrete after UK winters. Cheaper over 20 years than patching every 3.
  • Proper mesh or fibre reinforcement is the difference between "cracks everywhere in 5 years" and "zero movement for 25 years".
  • One continuous pour from our two plants means no cold joints, the weakest point in a yard slab. Wagons rotate every 20 minutes.

Step by Step

How to prepare & pour

01

Plan drainage first

Fall the yard 1:60 toward channel drains or grids. Slurry-contaminated runoff must reach an SSAFO-compliant collection point. Design drainage before you excavate.

02

Excavate 400mm deep

Dig to 400mm below finished level (225mm sub-base + 175mm slab with margin). Check for soft spots or old drainage that needs replacing before you bury it.

03

Compact sub-base

225mm of Type 1 MOT minimum, whacker-plated in 75mm layers. For clay or soft substrata, consider 300mm sub-base or geotextile membrane.

04

Formwork & expansion joints

Formwork around the yard perimeter. Plan saw-cut expansion joints at ~6m centres for big pours, prevents random cracking under thermal and shrinkage stress.

05

A393 mesh or steel fibre

A393 mesh on 50mm spacers, or specify steel-fibre reinforcement (saves labour, improves crack distribution). Our team can advise which is right for your loading.

06

Continuous pour & power-float

Pour wagons back-to-back to avoid cold joints. Level-screed, then power-float for a dense, hygienic, durable finish. Cover and cure for 7 days minimum before traffic.

FAQ

Common questions

What mix for a livestock yard?

C32/40 air-entrained with A393 mesh or steel fibre. For silage clamp floors go to C40/50 with sulphate-resisting cement (SRC). Livestock yards benefit from power-floating for hygiene and cleanability.

How thick does a tractor yard need?

150mm minimum for tractors, 200mm for telehandlers and HGVs. If silage trailers or articulated lorries will regularly use the yard, go to 225mm with fibre reinforcement.

Can you deliver 80m³+ in a day?

Yes. Our two plants combined run 100m³+ per day with pre-booking. For a large yard pour we'll schedule wagons to arrive every 15-20 minutes for a continuous pour with no cold joints.

What about SSAFO compliance for slurry areas?

Any area exposed to slurry or silage effluent needs SRC (sulphate-resisting cement) and impermeable finish. We supply mix designs that meet SSAFO Regs 2010, see our farmers page.

How long before I can use the yard?

7 days for light vehicles (cars, quads), 14 days for tractors and telehandlers, 28 days for fully-loaded HGV and slurry tanker use. Power-floated finishes take a few days longer to reach vehicle-grade hardness.

Can you supply to remote or rural farms?

Yes, our Coventry and Melton Mowbray plants cover the full Midlands. For farms at the edge of our area we may add a small delivery premium on small loads. Large pours (20m³+) are usually free of that surcharge. Call for a quote.
